Therapies for Sciatica: Spinal Decompression and Laser Therapy

Sciatica is one of the most common conditions that we diagnose and treat at McNulty Chiropractic. Sciatica, also called lumbar radiculopathy, is an inflammatory neurological condition rooted in the sciatic nerve, and chiropractors help patients with it all the time. About 40% of U.S. citizens are reported to have some appearance of sciatica in their lifetime. It can oftentimes be disabling during everyday tasks and require medical attention for relief. Sciatica can be identified by symptoms like low back pain, or pain that runs along the sciatic nerve, located in the area from the buttocks and down each leg. Along with chiropractic adjustments, there are additional treatments you can receive to manage and improve sciatica, namely spinal decompression and Class IV laser therapy. We offer both of these therapies at our office and urge you to come visit us if you suffer from the symptoms of sciatica!

How Spinal Decompression Helps and What to Expect

Sciatica is usually caused by a pinched nerve root in the spine, so this makes spinal decompression a perfect treatment option for managing this condition. When receiving decompression, the patient’s spine is lengthened by the computer-controlled table creating a vacuum effect in the space inside  the disc. With this traction and vacuum effect, bulging discs causing the symptoms can be pulled back into the disc, which takes the pressure off of the nerve for lasting relief.

During the treatment, you will be set up on the decompression table and strapped into a comfortable harness. The machine will gently stretch your spine on and off for about a 15 minute session. On average, protocol includes 10-20 sessions over a period of 1-2 months, but this will vary based on the treatment needs of each individual. Statistically, 88.9% of sciatica patients report success with decompression over several weeks of treatment. Spinal decompression is a safe and non-invasive option to reduce nerve compression and inflammation, reduce pain and numbness related to sciatica, and support long-term disc health.

How Class IV Laser Helps and What to Expect

Class IV laser therapy is another non-invasive, painless treatment for sciatica that uses near-infrared light with strong healing properties. It stimulates ATP, the body’s cellular energy, to heal the body and relieve pain related to herniated discs and/or sciatica. Sciatica patients who try our laser therapy notice reduced inflammation, decreased nerve pain, and faster tissue healing.

During the treatment, you will be set up comfortably on a table. The practitioner moves a warm, handheld device in circular motions over the affected area. In the case of sciatica, the treatment area will be somewhere in the spine, depending on where the sciatic nerve is being pressed on. Protective eyewear will be provided for both you and the technician to protect your eyes from the laser beams. The therapy is usually relaxing and soothing. Sessions typically last about 5-15 minutes, and relief may appear shortly afterward. No downtime is required following the treatment and you may immediately return to your daily routine.
